Weights

conservation weights holding down pages of old book

Weights are always an essential part of any Archival Conservation Tool set. Whether you specialize in bookbinding, paper conservation and repair, or textile preservation, you will find use for our highest quality ready-to-use Conservation Weights.
One thing to consider when choosing weights is a variety. Different shapes  to accommodate different objects, more surface can be useful for larger flat artifacts such as maps, posters and large scale artwork and photographic prints. You should have some soft and hard, heavy and light weights. We are particularly proud of our own Lineco Tuff Stuff 1.5 weights, encased in water-repellent, heavy-duty polybag.

If you are a textile conservator, weights will help you gently and safely stretch fabric while you repair or clean garments, tapestries or linens. For working with paper artifacts such as old documents, letters, brittle newspapers and other ephemera. In both paper and object conservation as well as framing, you might need to use weights to secure pieces after applying adhesive. If you are involved in bookbinding or book repair - snake weights are good for safely holding down fragile pages or keeping book open on display.

You can also be creative and create weights out of everyday objects, as long as they don't end up damaging your valuable objects. To ensure there's no off-gassing or acid transfer, try inserting a layer of Acid-Free Paper or Archival Quality Tissue between your home-made weight and the object, or wrapping them in Polyester Stockinette (to avoid contact with any rough surface, and create soft and smooth pressure).
